Helping Your son/daughter With Homework January 11th

On 11th January the College held a successful evening designed to support parents to support students doing their homework and to encourage an improved partnership between the College and parents.

The English, Maths, ICT and Science departments explained the types of homework set and how parent’s coul support their children in these subjects

In addition there was help and advice on general issues related to homework, including what tpo do if your son/daughter cannot do their homework, how much and what type of help should you give to your child,, how to use the internet effectively

Year 6-7 Transition Focus Group 19th October 2006

Over 140 people attended a successful Focus Group on 19th October Questions relating to the College and the primary-secondary transition process were raised.

Some were answered at the evening, others will be considered by the College. Below is a list of the questions asked? Answers to these should begin to appear by 6th November. (Diary Dates)

LUNCH

There were many questions relating to lunchtime management E.g. timing of lunches, rota system, Can the Oakdale Gate opened at lunchtime:


What is the procedure if there is a wet lunchtime
The details will appear on the website in due course, but all students have the opportunity to be under shelter.

Are students with packed lunches allowed to eat in the dining hall with their friends?
Yes.

Is it true that packed lunches are to be abolished by Dec 2007?
No.

Are school meals of a healthy balance?
Yes, and it is hoped that menus will be published on the website.

Why is year 7 always the last to go into lunch?
We had an experiment to alter this approach just recently. This will be reviewed, and any proposed changes notified to students and parents.

When doing lunchtime clubs, can a student go in early to get a hot dinner or must they bring a packed lunch?
They are able to get a pass from the teacher organising the activity and go in early.

Are Smile and Chill Club the only supervised areas at lunch times?

No, there are many other lunchtime clubs that are supervised.

HOMEWORK


Can IT homework be e-mailed to the student if they are absent?
Not at the present, but we are looking into the home-College IT link.

What is the homework policy if homework is set when the student is absent?
The student will need to complete it within an acceptable timescale.

What do the green, yellow red stickers mean?
This is explained in the planner.And will soon be available on the website.

CLUBS

After school clubs are very crowded, can there be extra?
The college is always looking to arrange more, but we have limitations on resources.

How do students find out what clubs are available, for example is there a list on the website?
Most students seem to have no difficulty – see previous question – but we will look into ways of improving information communication. Extra Curricular Activities / Year 7

How are students allocated to French or German? Can it be changed?
This will be explained on the website in the area about Curriculum Policy.

Do we have to keep buying PE kit with the logo as this could get expensive?
Yes. A fund exists to help those in proven need.

Can we buy a separate badge to put onto a white T Shirt?
Currently, no, but this is another suggestion we will look into.

Are letters to parents published on the website?
Yes, as are past editions of “Knowledge from the College

Is there an evening to tell parents what is going to happen to help with the transition for year 6 to year 7?
Yes, but the details have yet to be organised.

Can year students have a friend from their Primary school in their new year 7 class?
Yes, usually three or four.

When PE kit is lost, if it has the name and tutor group on it, can it be sent back to the tutor room?
Yes.

How are students alerted to the end of break/lunchtime if they are in Powerleague?
They are not allowed at break, and at lunch there is a whistle blown by the supervising staff.

Can there be a list of Parents evenings etc on the website?
Yes.

Is there an Induction Pack for new parents/late starters?
Yes.

Is there a confidential e-mail for parents to communicate with the College?
These are dealt with confidentially by a specific member of the admin team.

At what point do students start/stop being the responsibility of the College?
Students are subject to the College Code of Behaviour from the time they leave home until their return home.

Can letters be e mailed home?
Yes, if an e-mail address is supplied.

Why do students have to enter the building by specific doors?
To enable students to be directed quickly to the nearest room, and avoid congestion in the corridors. This is a large and complex site and traffic flow is an important consideration.
